The material
Reed, or carritx in the islands.
Reed is a fine, pale cane. In the Balearic Islands these umbrellas are asked for as carritx umbrellas, and they have been giving shade on beaches and porches for generations.
On our umbrellas the canopy is stitched to the ring frame and left long, so the umbrella has a generous sweep and gives full, closed shade. We also sell the reed clean in bundles, with tiered pricing, and in 1.6 × 3 m rolls for cabins and lightweight roofs.

Are reed umbrellas and carritx umbrellas the same thing?
They are the two names this long-skirted umbrella goes by: carritx is what it is called in the Balearic Islands.
How is it different from an African thatch umbrella?
The reed umbrella has a long, loose canopy; the African thatch one is made of tiles and has a cleaner profile. The African thatch one is repaired by changing a tile.
